Deciding to spend your summer holidays in Liguria, a region located along the northwest coast of Italy, offers a combination of natural beauty, charming cities and a pleasant Mediterranean climate. Here are some reasons to visit Liguria and some advice on what to see:

  • The Cinque Terre: This famous stretch of coast is one of the main points of interest in Liguria. The Cinque Terre comprises five picturesque coastal villages – Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore – all of which are linked by scenic footpaths. Enjoy the beaches, explore the hiking trails and admire the colorful houses overlooking the sea.
  • Genova: Liguria’s largest city, Genoa is a captivating destination that combines a rich maritime history with a vibrant cultural scene. Visit the historic centre, the largest in Europe, and discover its architectural heritage, such as the Cathedral of San Lorenzo and the Palazzo Ducale. Explore the Porto Antico, which houses the largest aquarium in Europe and other interesting museums.
  • Portofino: This luxurious seaside resort is famous for its enchanting beauty. Admire the charming colorful houses, the pleasure boats and the green promontory that surrounds the port. You can walk along the coastal paths to enjoy spectacular views or relax in the hidden beaches and coves.
  • Sanremo: Known for its mild climate, Sanremo is a popular seaside resort on the Riviera dei Fiori. Explore the gardens and elegant villas, stroll along the seafront and visit the famous Sanremo Casino. The city is also known for its Italian Song Festival, which attracts artists and spectators from all over the country.
  • Golfo dei Poeti: Located in the eastern part of Liguria, the Golfo dei Poeti is an enchanting bay that has inspired numerous poets and writers over the centuries. The town of Portovenere, with its ancient church of San Pietro and sea caves, and Lerici, with its castle and sandy beaches, are two of the top destinations to visit.
  • Gastronomy: Liguria is renowned for its light and healthy cuisine. Taste typical dishes such as Genoese focaccia, Genoese pesto, pesto trofie, pansoti with walnut sauce and fresh seafood. Don’t forget to taste the local white wine, such as Vermentino.
