The Abbey of Santa Maria in Montesanto is located in the municipality of Civitella del Tronto, in the province of Teramo, in the Abruzzo region, Italy. The abbey dates back to the 12th century and was built on the remains of an ancient Roman watchtower. The religious building has Romanesque-Gothic architecture with a brick and white stone gabled facade.
The interior of the abbey is decorated with 14th and 15th century frescoes and has three naves with a series of columns supporting the pointed arch, typical of Gothic architecture. The abbey of Santa Maria in Montesanto has undergone several restorations over the centuries and, in 1979, was declared a national monument.
Currently, the abbey also houses a museum of sacred art which preserves important works of art, including a 16th-century silver processional cross and a 17th-century wooden statue of the Madonna and Child.
Furthermore, the abbey is also used for concerts and shows, thanks to its outstanding acoustics and impressive atmosphere.
