Abruzzo. Valle del Tirino, a magical place on the clearest river in Italy

The Tirino Valley is an area of naturalistic interest located in the Abruzzo hinterland and is about 50 km from both Pescara and L’Aquila. The value of this valley is inextricably linked to the Tirino river, a river known as the clearest in Italy.

The Tirino river originates from the Campo Imperatore aquifer system and, after a 25 km karst journey, comes to light through three springs, all in the Capestrano area (the photo shows the stretch that falls within the Capestrano area itself, i.e. the wildest and clearest stretch) Capodacqua spring, Presciano spring and Lago spring. Along its route it is also fed by other small resurgences. In fact, its name comes from the Greek “tritano” which means triple source. The Tirino River is known as one of the clearest and cleanest rivers in Italy. Currently the flow rate is about 6000 litres/second and the water temperature is 11°C.

There are several activities that can be done in this area. such as walking and cycling or canoeing in the clear waters of the river. There are several tour operators who organize activities of this type. Photo by Samanta le Donne.

Come arrivare a Capestrano e al Centro Turistico e Formativo Valle del Tirino?

  • A25 Rome-Pescara highway, exit Bussi-Popoli;
  • Via Tiburtina Valeria at km 184 crossroads towards L’Aquila, on the state road towards L’Aquila, Capodacqua
