Hidden among the majestic mountains of the province of Potenza, the TT1 Astronomical Observatory of Castelgrande is a hidden gem for astronomy lovers and for those who wish to live a unique experience under the stars. Founded with a great interest in the universe in 1965, this observatory has become a benchmark in the exploration of the night sky.

The objective of finding a place with reduced brightness to build the observatory led to the choice of the suggestive “Toppo di Castelgrande”. In 1973, with the precious collaboration of the Osservatorio di Capodimonte, a temporary observatory was erected. However, the desire to explore the depths of the universe led to further developments, and between 1989 and 1993, the current observatory was inaugurated, which houses one of the largest reflecting telescopes on the Italian peninsula, with a diameter of 1.56 meters.

On 24 June 2018, the observatory received MPC accreditation with code L28, a sign of its commitment to celestial research and observation. But this place goes far beyond pure astronomy; it has undergone significant redevelopment in recent years, including educational activities for the public and collaborative scientific projects on an international scale, such as the notable CastelGauss project, focused on monitoring space debris in orbit.

What experiences can be had at the Astronomical Observatory in Castelgrande?

For visitors seeking a space adventure, the TT1 Astronomical Observatory offers an extraordinary opportunity to connect with the cosmos. The heart of the observatory is the TT1 telescope (Toppo Telescope No. 1), equipped with a mirror 156 centimeters in diameter, which offers spectacular views of stars, planets and galaxies. But the experience doesn’t stop there: the A. De Gasparis Observatory, also present in the area, has a telescope with an equatorial mount and a 40 centimeter mirror for further celestial observations.

To make your trip even more interesting and educational, you can rely on expert specialized operators who will guide you through dedicated routes, suitable for individuals, groups or schools. It will be a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the universe and discover the secrets of the night sky.

Plan your visit to the TT1 Astronomical Observatory of Castelgrande and prepare for an extraordinary journey through the stars and galaxies. Here, in the embrace of the mountains of Basilicata, you will find a fascinating world just waiting to be explored. For more information you can consult this page.
