View of the village
On the edge of the Simbruini Mountains Regional Natural Park lies the small yet charming village of Jenne. This compact settlement sits perched on a rocky spur overlooking the Aniene Valley, offering breathtaking views and a peaceful atmosphere.
With ancient origins, Jenne is—surprisingly—still one of the lesser-known villages in the Simbruini area. Yet it holds fascinating traces of its past and boasts a privileged location within one of the most scenic and protected areas of Lazio.
The village, which also hosts the park’s headquarters, stands at 854 meters above sea level and is located about 82 km from Rome, 12 km from Subiaco, 30 km from Fiuggi, and 54 km from Frosinone.
History and Origins
The earliest written records of Jenne date back to a donation act issued by Pope Leo IX, who granted the village to the Benedictine monastery of Santa Scolastica in Subiaco. This event is commemorated by a stele from 1052 bearing the inscription “Castrum Jennarorum.”
Over the centuries, Jenne passed through the hands of various rulers and noble families. Around 1079, it was reconquered by Ildemondo of the Conti family after a siege. In 1113, it briefly changed ownership again before being reassigned to the Abbey of Subiaco just three years later.
Later, the fief came under Abbot Simone and then Filippo di Marano, a relative of Rinaldo II—future Pope Alexander IV. Following the pope’s death, the lands were divided among heirs, until in 1300 they were handed over to Cardinal Francesco Caetani.
Among the most significant events in Jenne’s history were the “perpetual” donation to the abbey by Pope Urban VIII in 1639 and its inclusion in the Sacred Congregation of the Good Government of Rome under Pope Benedict IX.
What to See in Jenne
A visit to Jenne is like stepping back in time, wandering through narrow alleys and discovering its rich heritage.
At the entrance of the village, you’ll find the Church of Madonna delle Grazie. Its simple façade and small bell tower lead into an interior with two naves—the main one dating back to the 18th century and the side nave to the 14th century. Inside, you’ll find paintings, frescoes, statues of saints, and other liturgical decorations.
Continue downhill to the main square, where the parish church of Sant’Andrea Apostolo stands. Built in 1834 on the site of an earlier structure, it houses a fresco depicting the Madonna with Saint Roch and Saint Sebastian, along with a wooden crucifix from the 17th century.
From the square, head into the oldest part of the village, following a narrow street lined with neatly painted houses. Here, silence wraps around you as you walk toward the remains of the medieval castle built by Abbot Giovanni V—also the birthplace of Pope Alexander IV.
Today, only traces of the castle remain, best identified near the Church of Madonna della Rocca (also known as Santa Maria in Arce). This small church sits on the western edge of the village, dramatically overlooking the valley below. Inside, you’ll find 14th-century frescoes and a 16th-century terracotta statue of the Madonna.
