Calcata is an Italian town of 878 inhabitants in the province of Viterbo in Lazio. It is about 45 km from the capital. The Borgo is accessed from the only entrance that opens onto the walls and close to it are the remains of the Faliscan temple of Monte Li Santi. The Opera Bosco Museo di Arte della Natura and the Places of Culture are worth a visit, going up the Santa Ceciuli path (7 sculptural works in three stones from Lazio permanently installed in 2013)
What to see in Calcata?
Religious architecture
- The church of the Most Holy Name of Jesus is located in the old town. Its structure dates back to the 14th century, but it was restructured in 1793 at the behest of the Sinibaldi family.
Other places of interest
- The old town of Calcata stands on a tuffaceous spur on the Treja valley
- Narce archeology area where it is possible to see the remains of the archaic city
- Faliscan temple of Monte Li Santi
- Graffiti depicting lansquenet warriors who were in the baronial palace
- From the town you can access various nature trails, on foot or on horseback, which cross the Treja Valley Regional Park.
What to eat in Calcata?
In Calcata you can taste: Fettuccine with porcini mushrooms and tagliatelle with cacio e pepe, polenta with porcini mushrooms or spots and sausages, wild boar stew.
The village of Calcata in the cinema
This quaint little town was the filming set for a single “A wrong story” by Fabrizio De André as well as the location for some scenes of the film “La mazzetta” with Nino Manfredi and Ugo Tognazzi. In the village the scene of the destruction of the village was filmed in the film My Friends (1975)
