The Cathedral of San Pelino is located in Corfinio, a comune in the Abruzzo region of Italy. This Cathedral of San Pelino has ancient origins, dating back to the 9th century, even if the current building is the result of various phases of expansion and restructuring over the centuries. The cathedral’s current appearance dates mainly from the 18th century, when it underwent restoration after the 1706 earthquake.

This exterior part of the cathedral features a Romanesque style with Gothic influences. The facade is simple, with a portal surmounted by a circular rose window. Interior has a longitudinal plan, with a central nave and two aisles. The internal architecture shows Baroque influences, with decorated altars and ceiling frescoes.

What are the highlights of the Cathedral of San Pelino?

One of the highlights of the cathedral is the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, located to the left of the high altar. This chapel is decorated with stucco and paintings and houses a wooden crucifix dating back to the 16th century.

Another interesting feature of this place is the underground crypt. The crypt dates back to the 11th century and was only discovered in 1933 during restoration work. Inside there are well-preserved frescoes representing scenes from the Passion of Christ.

The Cathedral of San Pelino is an important center of worship for the local community and a place of historical and artistic interest. In addition to religious services, it also hosts cultural events and concerts.

If you visit Corfinio, this cathedral is definitely worth a visit to admire its architecture, frescoes and the spiritual atmosphere that reigns inside.
