The imposing fortress was built on several occasions between the 11th and 14th centuries, a period in which Bolsena was dominated on several occasions by the Monaldeschi Guelph family; enemies on the Ghibelline side were the Filippeschi. Both families were from Orvieto and competed for control of the city and the territory.

In 1240 Bolsena and Tuscia passed under the dominion of Emperor Frederick II; after his death in 1251 it returned to the Guelph side. The first installation of the main tower of the Rocca, part of the wall facing the lake and the northern wall facing the forum of ancient Volsinii date back to the years of the papacy of Boniface VIII (1294-1302). With the Bull of September 4, 1296, Boniface VIII declared Bolsena (and the lands of the lake) to be the domain of the Church.

Bolsena Castle, also known as Rocca Monaldeschi, is an imposing medieval structure located on top of a hill overlooking the picturesque Lake Bolsena. This castle is one of the most important monuments in the area and represents a significant example of medieval military architecture. Its features include:

  • Imposing structure: The castle has an impressive stone structure with crenellated towers and defensive walls. Its architecture recalls the medieval era and offers a panoramic view of the city of Bolsena and the surrounding lake.
  • Territorial Museum of Lake Bolsena: Inside the castle there is the Territorial Museum of Lake Bolsena, where you can discover the history and culture of the area. The museum houses a large collection of archaeological finds and historical objects that tell the story of the city and the lake.
  • Cultural events: During the year, the castle hosts various cultural events, art exhibitions and performances which make the visit even more interesting.
