The new edition of the Palio del Velluto 2023 is coming. The Palio del Velluto is a traditional event that takes place every year in Leonessa, a town in the province of Rieti in Italy. It is a historical re-enactment that commemorates the entry of Pope Pius VII into Leonessa, which took place on 23 September 1815, after his imprisonment in Fontainebleau.
The event consists of a parade of figures in period costumes, representing the various social categories of the time, such as nobles, artisans, peasants and soldiers. At the center of the festival is the Palio race, a competition on horseback that takes place between the four districts of the town: San Giovanni, San Giuseppe, Sant’Angelo and Santa Maria.
The race consists of a series of trials culminating in the actual race, which takes place along a dirt track. The riders must travel the course on horseback without a saddle, trying to keep their balance and reach the finish line first. The Palio is awarded to the district that manages to win the most points during the trials.
The event usually takes place in June and attracts many visitors from all over the area. The Palio del Velluto is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the history and culture of the country, among ancient traditions, shows, gastronomy and local crafts.
