A village with ancient roots

Praiano may feel like a peaceful retreat today, but its history stretches back centuries.

The name likely derives from the word praia, meaning beach or open sea, a reference to its close relationship with the water. During the 10th and 11th centuries, when the powerful Maritime Republic of Amalfi ruled these shores, Praiano was even chosen as the summer residence of the Amalfi doges.

Over time, the local economy revolved around fishing, maritime trade, agriculture on terraced hillsides, and traditional crafts such as linen production and coral fishing.
