St. Patrick’s Well: how much does the ticket cost? The famous and legendary St. Patrick’s Well is located in the center of the city of Orvieto (near the gardens with the Etruscan remains) and, after the Duomo, is the most visited site from a tourist point of view.

The reason for its construction is very simple: this work built by Pope Clement VII in the sixteenth century was useful for ensuring the water supply in the town even in the event of natural disasters or prolonged sieges.

Where does the name “St. Patrick’s Well” come from?

The name of this place is connected to a cavity found in Ireland that was said to be endless and that was connected with the Hereafter and with Purgatory. It was in these Irish places that Saint Patrick spent a lot of time in works of evangelization; for this Pope Clement VII wanted to dedicate the name of the well built in Orvieto to him, thus acquiring an aura of sacredness.

Nowadays to say: “St. Patrick’s well” means to allude to a boundless and mysterious reserve of wealth.
