What to visit near Viterbo? Viterbo is a city located in the Lazio region of Italy. It is an interesting city to visit for several reasons. Here are some of the reasons why it might be worth a visit:

  • History and art: Viterbo is rich in history and art, with numerous historic buildings and monuments of interest. The city has a well-preserved historic centre, with medieval streets, palaces and churches dating back to the 13th century. Among the main places to visit are the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, the Palazzo dei Papi and the Castello dei Priori.
  • Natural beauty: Viterbo is surrounded by green and flat countryside, with numerous parks and gardens offering opportunities for walks and outdoor activities. Furthermore, the city is located a few kilometers from the Cimini Mountains, a mountainous area full of hiking trails and breathtaking views.

  • Monti Cimini Natural Park. Located a few kilometers north of Viterbo, this park offers a variety of hiking trails through the Cimini mountains, with spectacular views over the valley below.
  • Civita di Bagnoregio. Located about 40 km north-east of Viterbo, this medieval town suspended on a hill is also called the “City that dies”, or a city that is slowly disappearing due to the erosion of the land on which they are built.
  • Calcata. Located about 50 km northeast of Viterbo, this characteristic medieval city is known for its historic center. You will be able to stroll among the stone houses and narrow winding streets.
  • Orvieto. Located about 70 km south of Viterbo, Orvieto is a historic city with an impressive Gothic cathedral. You can also admire a number of museums and art galleries. Here you can also admire and visit the famous St. Patrick’s Well.
  • Tivoli: Located about 80 km east of Viterbo, Tivoli is famous for its two historic gardens, the Garden of Villa d’Este and the Garden of Villa Adriana. Both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
