In its majestic elegance and solid structure, the Abbey of Fossanova represents a true jewel of Cistercian architecture, prototype of a new taste, transplanted from Burgundy to central-southern Italy, manifesto of a new spirituality.

Fossanova Abbey, daughter of Altacomba Abbey, was built between 1163 and 1208 and is an excellent example of the early Italian Gothic style, representing a clear transition from Romanesque to Gothic.

The interior, almost devoid of frescoes (some fragments are still visible on the walls until 1998), reflects the austere memento mori of the Cistercian monks.

Declared a “national monument” in 1874, the Abbey of Fossanova is the oldest example of Cistercian art in Italy and, together with the Abbey of Casamari, represents one of its greatest expressions. The complex was built at the end of the 12th century from the transformation of a pre-existing Benedictine monastery, perhaps dating back to the 6th century, of which a faint trace remains above the rose window of the church.

Where is Fossanova Abbey located?

The Abbey of Fossanova is located in the municipality of Priverno, 5 km south of the urban centre, in the province of Latina. The surrounding village, which has the appearance of a vicus, takes its name from a sewer which in the early days of the small village was called Fossa Nova.

When to visit it?

To fully enjoy the beauty of Fossanova Abbey, I recommend visiting it during spring or autumn. In these periods, the climate is pleasant and allows you to explore its suggestive cloisters and medieval architecture without the typical crowding of the summer months.

Opening hours are from Monday to Sunday from 8.00 to 18.00 (winter time) and from 8.00 to 19.30 (summer time).

Masses are celebrated on holidays at 08:00, 11:00, 18:00 and on weekdays at 18:00. Confessions are available during Holy Masses on public holidays only.

You can also book a guided tour, but you need to call ahead and form a group of at least 10 people. The abbey offers no accommodation or dining room. During liturgical functions, visits to the church are not permitted.

How much is the ticket?

Neither a reservation nor the purchase of tickets is necessary to access the abbey complex.

How to reach it

From Rome, Fossanova is about an hour’s journey by public transport, while from Naples it is about two hours. Some regional services of the Linea Cotral bus and the Linea SATLINE bus, leaving from the Priverno-Fossanova railway station, offer direct connections to the abbey. Check the timetables to plan your trip.

What to see in the surrounding area?

In the surroundings of Fossanova Abbey there are many interesting attractions to visit. The village of Priverno offers a fascinating walk through historic alleys and ancient buildings.

The Archaeological Area of Privernum allows you to explore the ruins of a Roman city. the Laghetti del Vescovo, with their natural beauty, are ideal for a relaxing day.

San Felice Circeo, with its splendid beaches and views, is perfect for sea lovers. In Terracina, the Acropolis offers breathtaking views and historical evidence. Finally, the Natural Park of Monti Ausoni and Campo Soriano invites excursions among uncontaminated landscapes and evocative scenery.

Contacts and information

The abbey is located in Via San Tommaso D’Aquino, 1 in Priverno. The telephone contacts are: 0773.93.90.61 and the official website of the place is www.abbaziadifossanova.it
