Rocca di Radicofani

ENIT - Agenzia Nazionale del Turismo

The Rocca di Radicofani is an imposing medieval fortress located on the summit of Monte Amiata, in the municipality of Radicofani, in the province of Siena, Tuscany, Italy. The Rocca di Radicofani was built in the 12th century to protect the Via Francigena, the ancient road that connected Romawith northern Europe. Its objective was to defend the territory from enemies coming from the south. Over the centuries, the Rocca underwent numerous modifications and expansions, becoming one of the most important fortifications in Tuscany.

The Rocca’s current appearance dates back to the 15th century, when the fortress was restructured and strengthened under the leadership of Antonio da Sangallo the Elder. The Rocca has a quadrangular plan, with four corner towers and an imposing central keep, about 30 meters high.

Today, the Rocca di Radicofani is a popular tourist attraction. It offers a spectacular view of the Val d’Orcia and the surrounding hills. Furthermore, the fortress houses a permanent exhibition on the history of the fortress and the surrounding area.

Rocca di Radicofani and the legend of the giant she-wolf

The Rocca di Radicofani is also linked to some legends, including that of the “She-wolf of Radicofani”, which tells of a giant she-wolf who lived around the Rocca and terrorized the local population. According to legend, the she-wolf was killed by a shepherd with a stone, thus becoming the symbol of the city of Radicofani.

In summary, the Rocca di Radicofani is a wonderful example of medieval military architecture and an ideal destination for lovers of history and breathtaking views.

When do we recommend visiting it?

The Rocca can be visited all year round, but the best time to visit the fortress depends on the visitor’s personal preferences and the activities available in the area.

If you prefer a mild and pleasant climate for outdoor walks, the spring months, from March to May, are generally ideal. In this period, the surrounding nature flourishes and the view over the Val d’Orcia is particularly suggestive.

Summer, from June to September, is generally the busiest time to visit the Rocca di Radicofani, but offers warm and sunny temperatures ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking and walking. It is recommended to visit the Rocca early in the morning or in the evening to avoid the heat and the crowds.

Autumn, from September to November, is another ideal period to visit the Rocca di Radicofani. The temperatures are pleasant and the surrounding nature offers warm and welcoming colours, making the view even more suggestive.

Finally, winter, from December to February, can be a less crowded period but with colder temperatures. However, the valley view can be especially spectacular with snow covering the surrounding landscape.

In any case, it is advisable to check the weather forecast before visiting the Rocca di Radicofani and to organize the visit according to your preferences and the events and activities available in the area during the period of your visit.
