The Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo is one of the oldest places of worship dedicated to the Archangel Michael and one of the most important Christian pilgrimage centers in Italy.

The sanctuary is located on the top of Monte Gargano, in the municipality of Monte Sant’Angelo, in the Puglia region of southeast Italy. This locality has a thousand-year history and is said to have been visited by the Archangel Michael in the 5th century. According to legend, the archangel appeared three times in a cave on the mountain, leaving an imprint of his foot.

The Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo was built right above this sacred cave. This current building dates mainly from the 13th century, although updates and modifications were made over the following centuries. The architecture is a mix of bizantino, Romanesque and Gothic styles. Inside the sanctuary, it is possible to admire medieval frescoes and various works of religious art.

How to visit the Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo?

To visit the Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo, it is possible to reach Monte Sant’Angelo by car or by bus. The city is located about 25 kilometers from the city of Manfredonia and about 50 kilometers from the city of Foggia. Once in Monte Sant’Angelo, it is necessary to climb the steps leading to the sanctuary. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, as the climb can be challenging.

What are the best times to visit it?

The sanctuary is open all year round and can be visited for free. However, it is important to note that during peak seasons, such as summer, it can get crowded with pilgrims. If you’d rather avoid the crowds, you might consider visiting during the spring or fall months. Also, if you wish to participate in a special religious celebration, you could find out in advance about the events held in the sanctuary during the year, such as processions or solemn masses.

The Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo is a place of great spirituality and historical beauty, and also offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the Gargano coast. If you are interested in history, spirituality or architectural beauty, this sanctuary can be a fascinating destination to visit in your Puglia experience.
