The first documents certifying the existence of the Giostra Cavalleresca di Sulmona date back to the second half of the sixteenth century. Starting from the early seventeenth century the Giostre went through moments of crisis. The last joust of the ancient era therefore took place in 1643. For almost two centuries, since the sunset of the ancient joust, no one was concerned with the tradition linked to Piazza Maggiore.

The Giostra of Sulmona for 2022 will take place on 30 and 31 July 2022. The parade is scheduled from 16:00 to 17:30 and the races from 17:30 to 20:00. The Joust of Europe and the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy will take place on 6 August 2022 with the procession scheduled from 20:00 to 21:00 and the Races from 21:00 to 23:30. (Updates follow). For more information visit the official website of the Giostra Cavalleresca di Sulmona.
