Absolutely not to be missed during a visit to Abruzzo is the Church of S. Pellegrino in Bominaco, a hamlet of Caporciano (AQ). The church (or oratory) was once part of a larger complex which also included the Benedictine abbey (dedicated to San Pellegrino) and the church of Santa Maria. In the 16th century, as a sign of protest for the loss of their autonomy, the monks who lived there decided to leave the monastery.
The original nucleus of the church, originally from the 8th century, was built on the site where the remains of the Syrian saint Pellegrino rest, which arrived in Bominaco between the 3rd and 4th centuries.
What currently remains of the Oratory of San Pellegrino is a small jewel. Its shape is rectangular with an ogival vault formed by four arches. Frescoes telling episodes from the Gospel adorn its walls. Furthermore, it is also possible to admire one of the oldest monastic calendars which highlights the months of the year, the phases of the moon and the signs of the zodiac.
